Our colleagues in the Media School are hosting a graduate student conference which promises to help graduate students establish a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or trandisciplinary community space. We are looking forward to participate! Please note that the CFP has a quick turn around. Submission deadline is this coming Tuesday.

Finding Common Ground: The 1st Annual Media School Graduate Conference

Date: April 7, 2017

Location: Franklin Hall

Submission Deadline: March 7, 2017

At the Media School, “media” is our common ground, the one thing that links us all together. We come from a variety of academic backgrounds, disciplines, and departments; we draw on a range of perspectives, methods, and theories. But we all share a common object of study: media.

With media as our common frame of reference, this conference is dedicated to showcasing the variety of interdisciplinary, media-related graduate student research at IU. The conference aims to bring graduate students from across campus together in constructive dialogue, to forge new relationships, cross-pollinate ideas, inspire, learn, and educate each other.

This conference will include both traditional 50 minute panels devoted to the formal presentation of research, and also more conversational workshops devoted to working through disciplinary, methodological, or political/cultural questions. Additionally, media objects such as short films, created images, photographs, or any other type of media object will be featured at the conference.

Topics may include but are by no means limited to:

  • Sex and the media
  • Gender and the media
  • Fan studies
  • Media technology
  • Media and culture
  • Video games/game theory
  • Cognitive science
  • Informatics
  • Political communication
  • PR and advertising
  • Research methods
  • Theoretical approaches

Submissions:

There are a few different ways to participate in the Media School Grad Conference:

  1. Panels: If you wish to present or share a current research project, please prepare a brief abstract (1 page max) that introduces your presentation and briefly explains how it connects to media research, broadly considered. We do not require full papers. If you feel that your presentation fits with one of the topics mentioned above, please mention in your submission where you feel you fit best. If selected, you will be asked to give a 10-12 minute presentation of your project. If proposing a panel, please submit a brief description of the theme, topics discussed, participants, and any other relevant information. Each session will be 50 minutes long, led by a moderator and consist of individual presentations with time for questions at the end.
  1. Workshops: Workshops will be open conversations organized around a series of predetermined topics and questions. Discussions can focus on a variety of things, including current research findings, open lines of inquiry, methodologies, and future areas of study. If proposing a workshop, please submit a brief description of the topics and questions to be discussed, as well as list of participants. Each session will be 50 minutes long. If you are interested in participating on a pre-formed workshop, these currently include:
  • Important questions in sex and the media.
  • How to use the Moving Image Archive successfully.
  • Studying media technology.
  1. Media objects: Finally, if you wish to submit a piece of media to be featured in the Franklin Hall commons or in a screening room, please submit either the media object or a description of the object. Please specify what format the media object is in and where you feel it would be best to present. Submissions could include short films, animations, photography, posters, or unique data visualizations such as word clouds.
